PURPOSE
The sole purpose is to promote the card game of 56 as social entertainment particularly for its enthusiasts spread around the world, without any monetary reward. It is also targeted at teaching the game to those interested.
This a trick taking game like Bridge, popular in Kerala, India and spread to rest of India and the world by emigrants. It is close to the card game 28, also popular in Kerala, in the way the cards are played and tricks taken. However, it is substantially more evolved in how the bids are made for the final contract. The bids attempt to communicate the strength of the partners allowing as many rounds needed to arrive at the best competitive final bid between 2 teams, much like Bridge but with conventions in tune with 56.
Each partnership typically has 3 players seated alternately. Two decks of cards containing J-9 -A-10-K-Q (48 cards) are dealt among the 6 players. The cards carry a weight of 3 -2-1-1-0-0 respectively for a total of 56 points. The minimum starting bid is 28. The rewards are staged: 28-39, 41-47, 48-55 and 56 points.
HISTORY OF 56 ONLINE
Raja Subramanian from Chennai, India developed the first online game in about 2011 with the help of his son Viswam. Although not from Kerala, Raja can form many teams from within his extended family. Jolly Jacob from Kochi, Kerala, and an ardent 56 enthusiast connected with Raja that led to the first public online 56 game in April 2012.
The initial group of online 56 players from around the world, volunteered time in working with Biju George, gamesonlinecorner.com, to enhance the game experience and flexibility of the program (Playsoft) to a level competing with that of face-to-face games. Click & Bid/Play is the basic mode of the game. Typed-in chat is available for post-game analysis. Skype voice/video can be added by the players to the game screen.
